This is an Antique Gentleman's pocket container for matches that has a patent date of 1904.
All things Western, like Cowboys and Buffalo`s were extremely popular at this time because
of Buffalo Bill's Wild West shows that toured both the U.S. and Europe in the late 1800's and
early 1900's. Almost all men of this period smoked, and this container held the wooden
match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches
needed a secure metal container to carry them around. This match holder is made from nickel
plated steel, and has a 3 dimensional embossed panel on the front depicting a cowboy on
horseback roping a Buffalo; with rolling hills, grassland, clouds, and 2 small Buffalo in the
background. The bottom has a ridged concave depression used for striking the matches.
The top of the container is hinged, and has a good snap when closing.
The back side has a 3 dimensional embossed design that allowed this panel with a border
frame on the back side to allow a merchant to insert a paper advertising piece sometimes
with a clear celluloid cover promoting their firm or product. This original advertising is
compliments of the Buffalo Hotel of Frederick Md. These nickel plated advertising match
safes were top of the line in quality; and typically a give away item to preferred customers
by the manufacturer or retailer.
