This is an unusual & desirable Gamblers or Sporting Gent's Antique 3 miniature dice cage inlaid into the face of the pocket Match Safe that was made to carry matches: in excellent overall condition. Almost all men of this period smoked, and this container held the wooden match sticks that could be struck on just about any surface to be lit. Obviously, these matches needed a secure metal container to carry them around. This specialty match safe was undoubtedly purchased at a retail establishment such as a jewelry or dry goods store, or tobacco shop; and was intended for a Sporting Gent who had the means to gamble. With these 3 miniature dice, the owner could spontaneously offer a challenge to any friend or acquaintance, any time, or any place, such as gambling for drinks at a saloon, bar room, gambling hall or sporting event.
There are a few variations of size and materials in these specialty match holders. Some are brass with nickel or silver plating; others are made from German Silver. This piece appears to be nickel plated brass. The top & bottom pieces have seams joining the front & back half shells and is heavy for its size. There is an oval, 3-dimensional diagonal pattern cast corrugated match striker on the bottom edge. This unmarked handmade piece has rounded corners, about 2" tall x 1 3/8" wide x 1/2" thick and weighs 1.1 ounces or 31 grams.
The 13/16" diameter brass dice cage is inlaid into the front, and has a dark green felt background. This dice cage is a style with straight sides and a glass front. The 3 miniature dice are about 1/8" square, are hand made from bone, and therefore slightly irregular: with hand applied ink dots for numeral markings. Often, this surface ink is worn off from normal use; but these dice appear to be in fine condition. When the match safe is swirled or giggled gently, the dice are randomly rolled inside the cage. Many of the glass tops of the dice cage front become clouded. This glass front has almost no cloudiness with very light surface scratches from pocket wear, with one small edge mark at 5 o’clock. Overall, in excellent untouched condition with light wear to the plating and one rib with adjacent to the hinge with a spot of flaking from normal pocket wear. There is single prong dovetail hinge at the side. This piece has a spring-loaded top with a spring. When you press the side button, the top springs open. To close the top, you press the side button, lower the top into the closed position, and release the button to avoid excessive wear on the small lip that engages the lip in the top to keep it closed.
This piece is in excellent condition overall for its age, circa 1890's or so. This would be perfect for any smoker, match safe, Tobacco, Saloon collector, Bar room, Gambler, or Sporting gentleman's display; and could still be used today.
