We own several large 500 plus storage locker facilities in several states and on occasion people don't pay the rent & abandon their processions. If we find an item we think has value we give it to a local charity for abused and battered women to sell in their store.  Sometimes we help them by listing the item on eBay and give them the money from the sale. After eBay's 20% plus commission and fees are paid, they receive the remainder.   On occasion you will see a
listing removed or ended early
and that is because somebody came into their store and bought it & it is out of our control. If that happens we apologize so if you see something, it might be best you place a bid & not try to wait until the last second to buy cheap.  If we use the term "antique" it is only for saying it is old and for use in the category eBay sometimes only offers for something like this. But the true definition of antique is 100 years old and this obviously is not.  We really don't know the exact age, details, or pretend to be antique or dealers of collectables.  We will mention any information we know of or observe but nothing past that.  We are in the storage rental business & not science fiction book writers.
We recently located this in an unpaid storage unit along with boxes full of many nice old antiques and collectables.  Three months of trying to locate the owner has proved unsuccessful and we have to clear it out to rent the until again.
We found several different of these from different locations and states.  They are called match safes and they pre-date the cigarette or cigar lighter.  Matches years ago had a tip made of phosphorus & when scratched against a rough surface made a spark and ignited.  But they had to remain dry to work, hence an item like this to hold them.  On the bottom there are ridges for striking the match to ignite.  And they provided a perfect medium for advertising a service or product.  Other than some surface oxidation or wear of the nickel plating, condition is outstanding.
