This is a fine quality Mint Antique silver embossed Gentleman's match safe. In the early 1900’s almost all men and many women used tobacco of some sort. Obviously, smokers needed a secure metal container to carry the strike anywhere matches. This larger sized rectangular shape match safe would accommodate full sized matches for cigar, cheroot, pipe Gentleman smokers, as well as those that smoked cigarettes.
Only a Gentleman of means would have been able to afford such a fine, large match safe / watch fob smoking accessory. Wealthy gentlemen desired fancy goods such as this silver embossed match safe holder that would, when occasion required, be brought out of the pocket with great flourish, offering a match to their friend or acquaintance with a flair of post Victorian gentlemanly courtesy. Even then, these match safes were considered object d’art and a status symbol. The inside lip has a 925 STERLING mark with a small diamond mark with the letter G. This large match safe pocket case is about 2 5/8" tall x 1 7/8" wide not including the ring, and 1/2" thick. Weight is 1.5 ounce or 43 grams. The sides are rounded, as are the corners. This match safe is 3 dimensionally embossed on both sides with a large depiction of the famous Western Motif entitled  “Let ‘R Buck”; an image of a cowboy riding a bucking bronco with his hat in midair. The large embossing’s extend to the top lid with the Cowboy’s extended arm and some prairie grass at the bottom. The top has a small lip for easy opening, a stand-alone 3 prong hinge found on quality match safes, and a small loop soldered on the side with another silver connecting ring for a watch chain. The top and bottom align perfectly, and the internal spring has a strong snap when opening and closing. The inside of the match safe is mostly black naturally occurring aged patina to the sterling surface. The bottom of the base has an elongated oval corrugated pattern used as a strike plate for strike anywhere phosphorous matches that appears unused. The silver is shiny with a very light aged patina, and in untouched, as found condition. When the match safe was polished, care was taken to leave aged patina around the edges and inside the embossing for contrast. Circa early 1900’s.
Overall, this piece is in mint condition with no damage, repairs, dents, dings or alterations. The embossing is fine and shows good detail. This handsome, eye-appealing silver 3-D embossed match safe case could still be used today by a discerning gentleman. This would be perfect gift for any match safe, vesta, Tobacciana, Silver Gentleman’s accouterment, smoker's accessory, or silver / smalls collection. Note: it is nearly impossible to photograph a curved shiny object that reflects like a mirror.
