This is a fine quality Antique silver Gentleman's vest pocket or Ladies purse unusual shagreen match safe. In the early 1900s almost all men and many women used tobacco of some sort. Obviously, smokers needed a secure metal container to carry matches around. This smaller sized match safe would accommodate the small sized matches for cigar, cheroot, pipe Gentleman smokers, as well as for women who typically smoked cigarettes.
Only a Gentleman or Lady of means would have been able to afford such a fine smoking accessory. Wealthy gentlemen and ladies desired fancy goods such as this silver mounted shagreen match safe holder that would, when occasion required, be brought out with great flourish; offering a match to their friend or acquaintance with a flair of Gentlemanly or Lady like courtesy. Even then, these match safes were considered an Object D' Art and a status symbol.
This piece is of French origin, circa 1910-1920; and like many examples, is unmarked. This small match safe pocket case is about 2" tall x 1 1/4" wide x 7/16” thick and weighs only .8 ounce or 23 grams. This match safe is built on a sliver frame that is gold washed inside. Most of this gold wash remains in untouched condition, and could be cleaned to restore the gold coloration, if desired. The frame consists of 4 panels, 2 for the top and bottom. These 4 panels have inlays of the traditional green sharkskin leather and are glued to the frame and secured with 4 tiny silver pins at the front of the base and the top. Both the top and base have silver border with the base having an inside lip to align the top and bottom align perfectly. The finely crafted hinge and the internal spring has a strong snap. The inside of the matchsafe shows uncleaned dark aged gold washed patina. The bottom of the base has an elongated oval recessed corrugated pattern used as a strike plate for strike anywhere phosphorous matches. The silver has a very light aged patina. Note the shagreen varies in coloration with the front showing slight variations of color of the non-display side of the back-base panel showing a more pronounced darker tone pattern.
Overall, in fine condition. This handsome, eye-appealing silver engraved match safe case would make an impressive gift and could still be used today by a discerning gentleman or lady. This would be perfect gift for any match safe, Tobacciana, Gentleman or Ladies accouterment, smoker's accessory, or silver / smalls collection.
The term "shagreen" refers to leather made from sharkskin or the skin of a ray fish that are naturally covered with round, closely set scales. These scales are sometimes ground down to give the roughened surface of rounded pale protrusions a smooth surface and then dyed; usually using a green vegetable dye. There was a resurgence in shagreen items being made during the 1920s and 1930s for a number of craftspeople catering to the luxury market. The random patterns, hard finish, and traditional pale green tone lends itself very well to the then prevailing Art-deco style.
