    Description

    This is a commemorative match safe issued by the International Match Safe Association for its 2005 Convention. The match safe was made with original dies from the 1890's using the same equipment and made by the same company, J. W. Evans and Sons, Birmingham, England. The tombstone design "Bill Stumps His Mark" is based on Charles Dickens' Pickwick Papers, Chapter XI published in serial form in 1837. The match safe is approximately 1 7/8 x 1 1/2 inches with a striker on the bottom. The bezel has complete Birmingham sterling 2005 hallmarks along with J. W. Evans maker's mark. There were a total of 32 match safes made, this is #18 as indicated by the "32/18" mark on the bezel. It's in near mint condition with a strong lid spring. Denis Alsford wrote an article on Bill Stumps His Mark and Charles Dickens that appeared in IMSA's July 1999 newsletter. A copy is available upon request.
