    Description

Odd Fellows I.O.O.F. Match Safe August Goertz & Co., Newark, New Jersey. Marked “PAT. Jan. 12, 1904”.
Silver metal (not marked Sterling). Measures 1-1/2 inches wide by 2-3/4 inches tall. This turn-of-the-century Odd Fellows Match Safe is decorated with the same images on both sides. These consist of the traditional I.O.O.F. interlocking rings, the "All-Seeing Eye", a dove, a beehive, an open hand with a red heart (a symbol of fidelity – the red is worn off on both sides) and the words, "Fellowship, Love, Truth, Benevolence" in a banner design.
It has nickel plated ends and inserts and an all metal body. It was made by the August Goertz & Co. of Newark, New Jersey. This match safe was used but is still in fair condition for a piece of this age. The plated finish has wear, scuffs and scratches and (as mentioned above) the red on the heart-in-the-palm symbols has worn off. I have not cleaned this piece in anyway.
There is surface rust and corrosion that can be found inside the cover, along the rim and inside the body. The hinge still opens and closes well with a strong snap. The ridged striker plate on the bottom is still sharp, well-defined and functional.
There appears to be no dents or cracks anywhere on the body. This is a great vintage piece that will make a fine addition to any collection.
    Ships to USA only.
